Preventing Type 2 Diabetes: Blood Sugar Testing 101

So, how do you prevent type 2 diabetes? First, you need to know what your blood sugar readings are. You can go to a physician or a lab and have your A1c tested. You can also buy an inexpensive test kit from Walmart and test yourself.

I usually have clients start with their fasting blood sugar in the morning. Both the ADA and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommend the following for people without diabetes:

99 milligrams per deciliter (mg/dL) or lower is normal.

100 to 125 mg/dL may mean you have prediabetes.

126 mg/dL or higher may indicate diabetes.

Note: None of this is a substitute for seeing your physician for an official diagnosis. This technique simply allows you to see how you are doing between wellness visits and routine lab work.

Massage clients that start monitoring blood sugar and implementing a diabetes preventative lifestyle report fewer muscular aches and pains, less joint inflammation, less brain fog and more energy.

I personally can tell you that the change in their tissue is noticeable to my sense of touch when working on them. When asked what the goal of their massage is for this visit, they often state that they are “Just here to relax. Nothing really hurts right now.” Which is music to any massage therapist ears since we often only hear from clients when they are in serious discomfort.

The Prevent Type 2 Diabetes coaching group kicks off Wednesday, August 23rd. If you are someone you know would like more information, head over to www.nourishingpractices.com and schedule a Welcome Call. On this call, all of your questions will be answered and if you feel it is a good fit for you, the next steps to join the group will be provided.
